The fort on the hill

Fort Frederick in Central is the oldest building in Port Elizabeth.  In actual fact, when it was constructed in 1799 it became the first permanent structure built by the British in Africa south of the Equator.

  1. Thanks for that... at least I now know there is something in PE pre 1800. I'll have to do a bit more research...
    The Royal Canal was being built at the same time in the area where we now live...
