Red Windmill

Those who remember PE from the old days will always associate the beachfront with this Red Windmill. It used to be a roadhouse, and sold the most delicious soft serve ice cream, amongst other good stuff! But it went the way of all our other roadhouses, and now houses Pro Dive. This was taken at sunrise yesterday (around 5ish) so you can see that these guys take their job seriously, they we already getting ready to go out. Tomorrow we'll show you where the Red Windmill moved to, it is still around, but as an ice-cream parlour/take-away.

  1. What were you doing up at 5ish in the morning? What will the beachfront be without The Red Windmill. And to think it nearly wasn't anymore.

  2. Just finished our Neighbourhood Watch patrol and thought we would try and catch a sunrise at the Pier, but the clouds wouldn't allow it. Yes, I was trying to remember, what was the story behind the near demise of the windmill, I remember it was almost demolished but didn't want to trust my memory and post wrong info (hehe)

  3. I'd be far more likely to visit this as an ice cream store :)

  4. I remember my folks taking me here on Sundays in the 60's for lunch. We would drive all the way from Kabega Park, but the hamburgers were worth it. And then we would sit in the car and watch people for hours. Couldn't get my kids to do that now...

  5. We used to love the Red Windmill ice creams. A big treat Sunday woudl be to go and play Putt Putt at King's Beach and then come here for choc-dip soft serves. So sad that neither of those institutions of childhood survive. But I do still go for walks along the beachfront clutching a choc-dipped ice cream from the new Windmill as they are still the best :)
